We will never be able to reach every child and every family in KwaZulu Natal that requires assistance, guidance and support. However, through reaching out to the surrounding communities and responding to the requests for help from other organisations, we are able to maximise the services that we offer to children and families. In response to the needs expressed by youth and people working with youth, we have developed three distinct training courses.

Accessing St. Philomena’s Courses

The subsidization of all our courses has kept them accessible to previously disadvantaged and poverty stricken beneficiaries. You can register for a course by contacting us telephonically or by email, between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) Stress and Trauma Healing (S&TH) are central to the healing process as they give hope and direction to many with whom we work. Courses are both an essential part of the child care development programmes at St. Philomena’s, as well as outreach development work extended to communities.

STRESS AND TRAUMA HEALING

SYSTEMATIC TRAINING FOR EFFECTIVE PARENTING

YOUNG LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

STRESS AND TRAUMA HEALING

The Stress and Trauma Healing course is comprised of 3 phases and is suited to youth and adults. The phases facilitate growth, beginning with recovery from trauma, leading to renewal of self-dignity and inner healing, and ultimately to empowerment as a provider of trauma healing activities in the community. Each phase of the course is intense, run over 3 days and requires the overnight accommodation of participants.

From Victim to Survivor

In Phase 1, participants are assisted with addressing and reconciling personal trauma. In facilitating recovery, this phase assists people to name and understand their traumatic event, draw on internal strengths and resources, reconstruct a healthy self identity and sense of hope, and find coping mechanisms in support of their healing.

From Survivor to Wounded Healer

In Phase 2, participants build on their understanding of what it means to be a healer. They are assisted with exploring together how they are healers for each other, addressing areas where healing needs to be initiated and the prevention of situations and actions that lead to regression. They take the opportunity to understand and adopt methods of healing for themselves and others.

Community Healing Facilitator

In Phase 3, participants are equipped with knowledge and skills to promote healthy community relationships, especially where people have to deal with traumatic experiences. Participants are encouraged to be a resource to their communities through providing activities which support healing. Participants are also encouraged to help with facilitating the Stress and Trauma Healing courses.

SYSTEMATIC TRAINING FOR EFFECTIVE PARENTING

The Systematic Training for Effective Parenting Course is designed to impart parenting skills and techniques, for the developmental care of children. The course target parents directly involved in our child care programmes, as well as community members interested in improving their parenting and family building skills. Systematic Training for Effective Parenting takes participants on a journey from understanding children’s behaviour to building positive relationships and implementing very practical ways of managing both the child and the parent care-giver.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

Our youth leadership programme has developed as a result of various school projects, where we saw a need to develop youth in our community. The youth programme, while facilitated by St. Philomena’s is lead predominantly by the youth in the area. They undergo a one-year training programme to become leaders and then organize and run youth meetings on their own. The programme includes youth meetings, camps, access to counseling and various outings.

ACCREDITATION FOR OUR COURSES
We plan to have our Courses accredited by the Relevant Sector Education Training Authority (SETA).

PROGRAMME FOR DRUG DEPENDANT YOUTH AND FAMILIES
Drug abuse continues to be a major contributing factor in the break down of family life. Very often, one family member's drug dependence results is the complete disintegration of that family. We believe that therapy and healing of a drug dependent person must take place in the context of the family.
